Road Infrastructure Agency (RIA) launched two open procedures for the selection of contractors for the modernization of 31.5 km of Route I-8 between “Kalotina” border check point and Slivnitsa . Their indicative value is 258.6 million levs.

One tender procedure is for “Modernization of Route I-8 Kalotina – Sofia ring road from km 1 + 000 to km 15 + 500 and stationary connection. This is the section from “Kalotina” border check point to the “Dragoman” road junction. Its total length is 14.5 km. The indicative value of the project is 141 667 715 levs. ГКПП Калотина

An extension of the existing road is foreseen, and in individual sections the geometric elements will be improved in order a design speed of 100 km / h to be achieved. The section will be with two lanes for movement in each direction and an emergency stop lane. At 12 + 520 km an entrance-exit from the first-class road to the “Dragoman” Intermodal Terminal will be built. Ten large facilities will be built, two of which are at the road junctions “Kalotina” and “Dragoman”. The deadline for execution of the order is 852 calendar days. Candidates can submit their bids by 17.30 on November 13 2017.

The other public procurement is for “Preparation of technical design and construction of a project: Modernization of Route I-8 “Kalotina” border check point – “Hrabarsko” connection from km 15 + 500 to km 32 + 447.20 and stationary connections. This is the section between Dragoman and Slivnitsa, with a length of 16.98 km. Its indicative value is  117 million levs. Funding is from the state budget.магистрала път

An extension of the existing road to a 27-meter gauge will be made, making the two-lane first-class road four-lane. In individual sections the geometric elements will be improved in order a design speed of 110 km / h to be achieved. The deadline for execution of the order is 910 calendar days. Candidates can submit their bids by 17.30 on November 16 2017.

Route I-8 is part of the major trans-European transport network. The route is part of London – Budapest – Belgrade – Sofia – Plovdiv – Istanbul – Calcutta, the shortest road linking Western Europe with the Middle East. The Kalotina-Sofia section provides a link to the Trans-European Corridor “Orient / Eastern Mediterranean”.

The modernization of the road section will improve the cross-border connection between Bulgaria and Serbia and the completion of the West-East motorway network on Bulgarian territory. With the construction of the section, travel time will be reduced and comfortable and safe driving conditions will be ensured.
