Yordanka Fandakova, the new municipal councilors, district mayors and mayors of the Sofia Municipality sworn in at the Sofia Municipal Council. This will be Fandakova’s fourth term as mayor of Sofia. She first become a mayor in 2009 as the first woman in the post.
61 municipal councilors, 24 district mayors and 31 mayors have also sworn in. Among the new faces are arch. Borislav Ignatov from Democratic Bulgaria and Boris Bonev from Save Sofia. The former MP and “Attack” leader Volen Siderov is also part of the new City Council.
“Each of us is in this room because we have received the confidence of the citizens of Sofia. Our first responsibility is to the people of Sofia regardless of who they voted for”, Yordanka Fandakova said in her welcome address. “Our party affiliation is taking a step back because the decisions we will make are decisions for the city, because building a community is about accepting common goals with common causes”, she noted. “We went through a difficult campaign and many things were said – both truths and lies. However, one promise united us, and this is the promise of change – a change for Sofia. Change is not a slogan, but a direction and a goal. It requires courage and a clear look”, she emphasized.
“My door will always be open to talk about ideas, solutions. What I will not support is populism and attempts to use the city to solve party problems”, Fandakova said categorically. “The future of this city is more important than the rating of any party or person. I will count on each of you for the changes I will propose and for the decisions we need to take”, the mayor told the municipal councilors. “In a month, I will propose to the City Council structural changes in the work of the municipality, which will guarantee greater speed of work, more control and more publicity. That is why I propose new sectors – “Construction”, “Digitization and investments”, “Transport” , said Fandakova.
“This is the way to increase the speed of development. The only way to meet the expectations for more order and speed is work”, she stressed. “I expect the new City Council to structure itself quickly and to work at the pace that citizens expect of us. Sofia does not have time to lose. I guarantee an open dialogue about projects for the city and work with the City Council”, added Fandakova
